Some boundary posts have a hybrid character. While they are time-stamped with a game-time indicator, their content makes it clear that they relate to the post-match situation (e.g. â 90+2 min: Peep! Peep! Peep!â). For the sake of consistency, these boundary posts are classified as belonging to the match commentary proper. This classification is based on the game-time format of temporal deixis, even though their internal temporal situation is evidence of their retrospective view on the sports event (as in the example below).
The two main functions, i.e. to wrap up the commentary on the match and to terminate the whole speech event, can be realized in two ways. The functions can either be condensed within a single post (i.e. the boundary post that also serves as the final post of the entire LTC) or realized in two separate posts. In the following example, the last post of the match commentary (time-stamped â 90+2 min â) mixes match and post-match coverage, and the boundary post proper (â What this means: â) performs the termination of the LTC:
90+2 min: Peep! Peep! Peep! Howard Webb draws proceedings to a close with three perfectly timed, wonderfully pitched blasts of his whistle. Brazilâs players congratulate each other, while Chileâs hunker or lie down on assorted plots of turf around the pitch, several of them in tears. On the sideline, their manager sits alone in the dugout looking mightily depressed. Theyâre a game bunch who deserved a goal or two at least tonight, but ultimately it was their toothlessness up front thatâs done for them â as entertaining as they were to watch, they just werenât good enough in front of either goal.
